Mile House, BC, Canada is
a recreation community in the heart of Lake and Ranchland Country
also referred to as the Interlakes Highway region. A region of
rolling hills, pastures, grasslands, wetlands, marshes and mountains
surrounded by lakes, rivers and creeks of all sizes, numbering
in the hundreds.
As one of the "Mile Houses" on the Cariboo
Wagon Trail during the Gold Rush era, 100 Mile House serviced
the miners and fur traders coming off the trail. In the day, each
"Mile House" derived its name by how far it was from
the community of Lillooet,
BC. - for example 70 Mile House, 108
Mile House, 130 and 150 Mile Houses, etc.
100 Mile House, BC is the main community servicing
the Interlakes Highway region. The other townsites and villages
in the Interlakes area include Lone Butte,
Lac La Hache, 108 Mile Ranch, 70
Mile House, Buffalo Creek and Forest Grove. Each with a distinct
history, each surrounded by many lakes.
Today, 100 Mile House, B.C., is a great base for
year round adventures. During the sunshine months people explore
the lakes and trails of the region while hiking, fishing, canoeing,
kayaking, cycling, birdwatching, water skiing, backpacking, mountain
biking, windsurfing, boating, dirt biking, off roading, ATVing
and camping.
The hundreds of lakes in the Interlakes region
provides some of the best trout fishing in the province, so much
so, that Hwy 24 is referred to as The Fishing Highway. Do your
research as some of the lakes do not permit power motors, some
only permit electric motors and others permit no motors at all.
Some of the more popular lake destinations include Lac La Roches,
Lac La Hache, Canim,
Mahood, Green, Horse, Sheridan, Bridge and Deka Lakes.
Hiking and backpacking adventures in the region
provide some spectacular views of waterfalls, valleys, meadows
and wildlife. Some of the waterfall hikes in the region to take
note of include the Canim-Mahood,
Bridge Creek and Deception
Falls. For people who enjoy the opportunity to explore a chain
of lakes paddling, the Moose
Valley Park Canoe Route is the ticket.
During the winter months, after the snow has fallen
and the temperatures have dropped, the local gravel roads and
trails become recreation routes for snowmobiling, cross country
skiing and snowshoeing. For some people, when the lakes in the
area freeze over they grab a fishing rod and head outdoors for
some ice fishing.
The 100 Mile House business centre provides many
of the services required by travelers including accommodations,
restaurants, pubs, internet, coffee houses, laundromats, gas stations,
banks, grocery stores and tour companies.
