| Canim
Falls / Mahood Falls Hiking Trail is a short,
leisurely 1 kilometre hike along a very well maintained wheelchair
access hiking trail leading to two, yes two, spectacular waterfalls.
The easy grade hiking trail begins near Canim Lake just down from
Wells Gray Provincial Park located east
of the community of 100 Mile House, British Columbia, Canada.
The short 1 kilometre hiking trail leading to the waterfalls
explores along
a high ridge overlooking a river valley passing by steep rock
cliffs and canyon walls. Although the trail is wide and very well
groomed, please keep away from the edges as the trail drops off
quickly to the canyon below. When hiking with children keep them
close.
From
the trailhead it is a short 0.5 kilometre hike to the first falls
- Mahood Falls - which is a 15 metre (49 feet) waterfall created
from a Mahood Lake outlet creek. Once at the falls there is a
fenced viewpoint, peering out through the trees looking straight
out at the falls.
Continue
hiking along the same trail for a few more hundred metres and
you will come across another fenced lookout area overlooking Canim
Falls which is a 20 metre (66 feet) waterfall created from an
outlet creek, also, draining out from Mahood Lake.
Look
closely to your right when visiting Canim Falls viewpoint and
there is a rough, well hidden, access trail leading down to the
base of the waterfall. The route is steep and is covered in loose
gravel and exposed tree roots. At the base of the falls, the views
take on a new feel as you can get up close and personal to the
falls and get wet from the mist.
There is a pit toilet, bear proof garbage bins and some directional
signs marking the trail located at the trailhead. Parking for
the trail is limited and along the road. Once finished exploring
the Canim - Mahood Waterfalls take some time to explore Deception
Falls which is located up the road deeper into Wells Gray
Park.
How
to Get to Canim - Mahood Falls: From the
community of 100 Mile House travel north for 1 kilometre and then
turn right onto the Canim-Hendrix Rd. Continue past Forest Grove
following the signs to Mahood Lake. Look for the gravel 8100 Road
leading to Wells Gray Park. 4 kilometres south of the Wells Gray
is the trailhead.
