Lake , BC, Canada is
a small
town located 220 kilometres
(136 mi.) from Williams
Lake on Highway 20 in the Chilcotin Grasslands region of British
Columbia, Canada. Tatla Lake is on the western edge of the Chilcotin
Grasslands surrounded by a large selection of lakes, rivers and
a network of backcountry gravel roads.
The main service village located on Highway 20
consists of a few commercial buildings with special people wearing
many different hats. The General Store, for example, is a gift
store, grocery store, coffee shop, post office, repair shop and
gas station. The other buildings include a restaurant and a motel.
Also in Tatla Lake area there is a sani dump, first aid station
and a few resorts.
The backcountry, in and around, Tatla Lake attracts
travelers who enjoy hiking, boating, fishing, canoeing, horseback
riding, wildlife viewing and wilderness camping. And during the
winter snowmobiles become the transportation of choice for work
and play.
In the backcountry is a good selection of lakes,
rivers and sightseeing opportunities traveling the gravel roads.
The major protected parks in the region most accessed from the
gravel roads include the Ts'yl-Os and Nuntsi Provincial Parks
and the Homathko River - Tatlayoko Protected Area. Each with hiking
trails and lakes.
When driving to the Tatla Lake area, it is wise
to take some time out and plan a side trip to some of the more
popular lakes in the region. Two of the lakes in the region include
the Chilko and Tatlayoko Lakes. Chilko Lake is located in the
Ts'yl-os Provincial Park and is the largest natural high elevation
fresh water lake in North America. Tatlayoko Lake is next to the
Homathko River - Tatlayoko Protected Area located in the Potato
Mountains - home to fossils and ice caves.
Many adventurers arrive in Tatla Lake region to
fish the remote lakes. Many of the lakes in the region connect
to the gravel road network but not all. Some of the adventure
lake destinations require hiking, horseback riding or even a floatplane
to access. Some of the lakes to, maybe, plan for include Eagle,
Bluff, Horn, Cochin, Choelquoit, Tsuniah and Tatla Lakes.
Horseback riding trails also exist in the Tatla
lake region. Some of the long haul horse trails include the Bluff
Lake and the Potato Trails. The rivers and lakes in the region
combine forces creating canoe and kayak routes like the Chilko
River and Taseko River Paddling Routes.
