Likely and Horsefly Villages & Lakes
Central Cariboo-Chilcotin Region, British Columbia, Canada


Likely and Horsefly Lakes are two of the bigger wilderness lakes located in and around the community of Williams Lake, British Columbia, Canada. Both lakes are remote, set in a wild environment, and both are popular recreation destinations. The activities most popular being boating, fishing, camping, canoeing, horseback riding, kayaking and hiking.

The Village of Likely, once named Quesnel Dam, is situated where the west arm of Quesnel Lake meets the Quesnel River. Quesnel Lake is the deepest fjord in the world and it is the Cariboo region's largest lake. The recreation lake enjoys over 500 kilometres of exposed shoreline and at one point the lake reaches a depth of over 600 metres.

The Village of Horsefly, BC is located in the heart of lake country with the Cariboo Mountains in the background. The area is rich in lake activity with fishing, kayaking and canoeing being the most popular. Horsefly Lake, west of the village, and Quesnel Lake, north of the village, are two of the more popular lakes near the Village of Horsefly.

In many cases the villages act as base camps and the lakes and rivers in the region become the fishing destinations. Some fish local lakes while others go deep into the woods to fish. Most book with guides for remote fishing. Others prefer to do it alone fishing at the more easily accessible lakes. Many of the bigger lakes have numerous boat launches and recreation sites. Most arrive with boat in tow for a chance to fish lake char, kokanee, rainbow and dolly varden.

Around the villages of Likely and Horsefly the trails provide many hours of activity year round. In the summer the trail systems in the region are popular for camping, horseback riding, ATVing and hiking. In the winter snowmobiling is popular for transportation along the gravel roads and trails.

Some of the trails to make note of near Likely include Benny Lake, Mount Brew, Browntop Mountain and Mount Jacobie Trails. Some of the trails near Horsefly include Moffat Falls, Abbott Lake, Corner Lake, Horsefly Mountain and Viewland Mountain Trails.

Both villages have services important for travelers and people of recreation including accommodations, tours, guides, gas stations, pub, ATM and general stores.

How to Get to Likely: The best access to Likely is near 150 Mile House at around the 15 kilometre mark from Williams Lake. It is then that you need to watch for the road signs and the highway junction at 150 Mile House pointing to Likely. Turn and continue driving to the fork in the road near Dugan Lake. Veer left onto Likely Road and drive to the village.

How to Get to Horsefly: The best access to Horsefly is near 150 Mile House at around the 15 kilometre mark from Williams Lake.
