| Stampede
Grounds is a rodeo park in the centre of the
community of Williams Lake, British Columbia, Canada. Just across
the street is the lake, Williams Lake, and up on the ridge, behind
the stampede, is the retail sector of the community. From most
points, in the centre of town, the stampede grounds are in view.
The park is a fully equipped complex suited for many different
types of events especially major rodeo events. The Williams Lake
Stampede Grounds is the ideal complex to practice western skills
and to hold events celebrating these skills. It is here that cowboys
and cowgirls feel at home riding and racing horses and cattle.
The complex is large from start to finish. The key components
include a central rodeo ground with a grandstand, an outdoor riding
ring, horse stables, cattle penning arena and an equestrian race
track. In between the red buildings one notices rows of horse
trailers and piles of hay bundles covered in plastic. And every
once in awhile a horses head pokes out of a stall to see what
all the commotion is about.
Also onsite is a small RV campground and a sani dump, a baseball
field, curling rink and other event facilities. The community
is deep in cowboy country and, obviously, the stampede grounds
plays a big part in the community. And it does, the community
plays host to one of BC's popular rodeos - The Williams Lake Stampede.
The Williams Lake Stampede draws cowboys and cowgirls from across
the nation to compete in horse and cattle events. Some of the
events include bull riding, barrel racing, bareback riding, saddle
bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie down roping and chuck wagon
races.
On the ridge above the stampede grounds in the Pinchbeck Trail.
It is a short trail leading from the downtown core to the Chilcotin
Hwy. The Pinchbeck Trail is named after one of the first pioneers
to settle on the shores of Williams Lake. From the Stampede Grounds
and the Pinchbeck Trail one can easily reach Scout
Island Park and Boitanio Park.
